The Properties of Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a botanical astringent from the plant Hamamelis virginiana. Astringents shrink or tighten tissues in your body, so can help to offer relief from discomfort in skin-related conditions.

Witch hazel, traditionally used by Native Americans, is now used in some treatments for acne, sun burn, nappy rash, haemorrhoids and more.

The Properties of Calendula

Calendula officinalis, as it is officially named, is a plant whose flowers are used as the ingredients in ointments, creams and gels for application to skin in both human and animal care.

It contains active ingredients like flavonoids (an antioxidant) and triterpenoids (which have a wide range of pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory and, antibacterial effects) which are thought to be behind its potential benefits. A traditional remedy, modern research has found calendula to be helpful in the care of many skin ailments - it is found in some treatments for nappy rash, ulcers, athlete's foot, and more.

The Properties of Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera contains many naturally occurring antioxidants and has recognised antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and immune-regulating properties. It has ‘cooling’ properties with most skin and feather problems being ‘warm’ disorders.

The Properties of Honey

Honey is a natural humectant - it attracts and holds moisture, to help to keep skin hydrated and prevent dryness. Its anti-inflammatory compounds also help to soothe redness and irritation.
